Love Is In All Ads – How Valentine’s Day Reflects in Advertising
Great advertising is the type of promotion that finds a way to include elements specific to all celebrations in the ads for products that have nothing to do with the respective celebration. Just think of all those insurance special offers for Father’s Day or Thanksgiving. Somehow, those ads are believable and bring in great conversion rates.
Now that Valentine’s Day is almost upon us, the challenge for all designers and art directors is to close the sale for items that have not one ounce of romance attached to them. As hard as it seems to believe, businesses like car rental, beer, shaving products and furniture are putting up Valentine’s Day ads and these ads, over the years, have entered a hall of fame of their own.
Let’s see how these ads manage to be memorable:
1. Crude Fun
There are types and types of humor. Crude fun is not for everyone, but even if you are revolted you cannot easily forget these ads.
McDonald’s turned their burgers into a special gift, while Thrifty car rental proposes cheap alternatives to romantic dates in a hotel room. We don’t know if anyone tried these Valentine’s Day ideas (or if they survived to tell the tale), but we can’t ignore these original ads.
2. The Parental Challenge
Durex congratulates couples who use their competitors’ products for becoming parents. Ikea, on the other hand, promises a free crib for each baby born exactly 9 months after Valentine’s Day. We don’t know how many couples took up the challenge, but Durex is still the best selling condom brand….
3. Love Is Everywhere
A freshly opened Heineken bottle will release a Cupid whiff on Valentine’s Day. Entwined headlights will form a heart. And various brands of energy drinks promise a long lasting Valentine’s day and night. Some ads are quite NSFW, but that’s the magic of Valentine’s Day. All rules are broken, everything is allowed.
How far will you let your creativity go this Valentine’s Day?
